What is a Proof of Concept (PoC)?

A Proof of Concept is a focused build that proves your idea works in practice. It is not a slide deck or a clickable mock-up alone — it is working software that exercises the hardest parts of your workflow: integrations, calculations, permissions, or mobile use in the field.

For Australian SMBs, a PoC answers: Can we actually automate this process? Will staff use it? Does the technology fit our budget and timeline?

Typical PoC scope includes wireframes, one or two critical user journeys, and deployment to a test environment. Timeline is often 4–8 weeks, depending on complexity.

What is a Minimum Viable Product (MVP)?

An MVP is the first production-ready version of your product: enough features for real customers or staff, with security, hosting, and support appropriate for daily use. It builds on a validated PoC (or a very well-defined spec when risk is already low).

An MVP is not “half a product forever.” It is the smallest complete release that delivers measurable value — faster quotes, fewer spreadsheets, membership self-service, or field job visibility.

What is a Minimum Lovable Product (MLP)?

An MLP goes beyond bare viability. It adds polish, performance, and features that make users want to use the tool — not just tolerate it. Think refined UX, notifications, reporting, and workflows that feel natural on mobile.

Many teams reach MVP first, then evolve to MLP based on usage data and feedback.

Comparison: PoC vs MVP vs MLP

MVPShip to real users8–16 weeks (after PoC)Moderate
MLPDelight and scale16–24+ weeksManaged growth

When to use each stage

Choose a PoC when:

  • You are replacing a complex spreadsheet or manual process
  • Integrations (CRM, accounting, payment) are uncertain
  • Stakeholders need to see software before approving full budget
  • You are comparing custom build vs off-the-shelf

Choose an MVP when:

  • The PoC succeeded or requirements are already validated
  • You need production hosting, roles, and support
  • Real users will depend on the system daily

Choose an MLP when:

  • Retention and referrals matter
  • Competitors offer polished experiences
  • You are scaling across teams or locations

How Movate maps Discover → Validate → Build

  1. Discover — We map workflows, pain points, and success metrics with your team (Sunshine Coast meetings or remote across Queensland and Australia).
  2. Validate (PoC) — We build core flows you can test with real data.
  3. Build (MVP / MLP) — We iterate to production, deploy, and support growth.

You own the IP at each stage. PoC code is reusable or handover-ready if you change direction.

Australian examples

  • Tradies: PoC for job sheet → quote flow; MVP adds scheduling and mobile photos; MLP adds customer portal and analytics.
  • Clubs: PoC for membership renewals; MVP adds events and committee reporting.
  • B2B sales: PoC for pricing rules engine; MVP adds CRM integration and PDF quotes (see our printer sales case study).

Summary

Staged delivery is not about paying twice — it is about not paying for the wrong product once. A PoC gives evidence; an MVP gives operations; an MLP gives competitive experience. Most Sunshine Coast and Queensland businesses we work with start with validation, then scale investment as confidence grows.
